Everyone’s favorite dance competition reality show is back!
This week, Fox announced that “So You Think You Can Dance” will be back for a 14th season this summer. (Raise your hand — or perfectly pointed toes — if “SYTYCD” is older than you are!) But if you’re a mini- or junior-aged dancer and were hoping for your shot this season, you’ll have to wait a bit longer. Unlike last season, which featured dancers 13 and under, the upcoming season will bring “SYTYCD” back to its roots, auditioning dancers ages 18–30.
“This season is about giving our loyal fan base what they’ve been asking for,” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said in a statement. “We’ve decided to go back to basics by bringing the best of our past formats together for an exciting new summer, featuring accomplished adult competitors partnered with fan-favorite All-Star dancers.”
As always, the show welcomes dancers of all styles, from contemporary and ballet to ballroom, breaking, and animation. Once the group is narrowed to a Top 10, the “America’s Favorite Dancer” hopefuls will be paired with All-Stars from past seasons who will guide them throughout the competition.
Lythgoe also promises “new surprises which are sure to wow our viewers.” (One surprise we already know: Paula Abdul won’t be returning to the judging panel, since she’ll be on the Total Package Tour.)
The audition format is also different this time around. The show will only hold in-person tryouts in two cities — but you can’t just show up and dance for Cat Deeley and the judges. All potential contestants must register online here with a dance video before the auditions. From there, selected dancers will hear from the “SYTYCD” producers, who will schedule in-person auditions in NYC (March 4–6) or L.A. (March 17–19). The deadline to register for a chance to audition is February 19 for NYC hopefuls and March 5 for L.A. dancers.
Get those videos ready — and see you on TV this summer!
