The Jo+Jax Collective is our group of uniquely talented individuals, each possessing special qualities that have set them apart in the dance world. Each team member boldly and unabashedly represents a deep passion for his or her craft. Our Collective dancers inspire us—and we think they’ll inspire you, too!
Each month on the J+J blog, we’ll spotlight a stellar member of the Collective. This month: the ridiculously gifted and oh-so-stunning Chantel Aguirre!
Name: Chantel Aguirre
Hometown: Santa Cruz, CA
Claim to fame: Shaping Sound Dance Company member, Still Motion Dance Company member, featured in Carrie Underwood’s “Something in the Water” music video, on faculty with JUMP and NUVO dance conventions
Favorite piece of Jo+Jax gear: The Stella Pant. “I dance in them every chance I get. They’re amazingly comfortable and still fitted enough to show your lines.”
Why she’s a Jo+Jax fan: “I have looked up to Joey and Jacki for as long as I can remember. They are brilliant dancers and genuine humans, and that translates into everything they make. Their style is so melded into their line and it’s just so right. The fit is great, the fabrics are so smart for dancers’ bodies, the lines are aesthetically pleasing, and the overall style is sleek and professional but still fun.”
Dance crush: “My boyfriend, Michael Keefe! He’s my life crush and my dance crush. He’s one of the most brilliant tap dancers I’ve ever witnessed—his musicality and awareness of his feet and body when he taps always shocks me. His sounds are crisp and precise, but when he’s onstage you can’t take your eyes off him. He’s also a stunning contemporary dancer. I’ve had the blessing of choreographing and teaching with him a lot in our relationship, and the way he hears music, dances, and choreographs comes from a completely genuine place.”
If she had to eat one food for the rest of her life: Sushi and warm chocolate chip cookies
Three things in her dance bag right now: “A Thera-band, T-spheres massage balls to roll out my feet, and Beats by Dre headphones.”
Her must-see TV shows: “Suits,” “Scandal,” and “Mad Men”
Chantel, let’s say your life is being turned into a movie—exciting! Who’s playing the leading role and who’s the love interest? “To play me, whichever actress shows up at auditions with the biggest eyebrows! Maybe Camilla Belle or Lily Collins. As for the love interest, it would have to be someone with long hair and a beard like Michael, so I’m going with Shia LaBeouf!”
If she weren’t a dancer, she’d be: A surgeon, anesthesiologist, or interior designer
Chantel’s advice for aspiring dancers: “Don’t take time or opportunities for granted. Live in the now and soak up everything around you. There are so many brilliant minds around us—teaching us, dancing by our sides, and in the past who have changed history for dance—so learn from them and absorb as much as you can.”
