When you’re auditioning, whether it’s for a scholarship at a convention or a Broadway show, there are hundreds of talented dancers working hard to be seen and considered for a position. While all auditions require a high level of talent or technique, often times there may be more at play that can make or break your chances of winning over the casting directors. Here are some tips for standing out in an audition scenario that may help you win the room!
First things first– find the perfect audition look!
This is our specialty! A stylish, timeless audition look is the first place to start when it comes to auditioning. You may be in front of the same casting team time and time again. That being said, finding an audition wardrobe that is so *uniquely you* is key. Maybe you have an audition outfit you wear to each audition, or perhaps you dress based on the work you hope to book. Pay attention to detail.
Choreographers are looking for dancers who can pick up choreography quickly while paying attention to the small details. Do you have trouble picking up choreo? Use the tell – show – do model to your advantage. When the choreographer begins teaching the combo, listen and observe before executing the steps on your own body. This will help you gain a better working knowledge of what they are looking for.
Keep it pleasant.
The audition room may be filled with a lot of anxious energy. Exuding confidence is the best way to stand out in a crowded place. Try your best to be cool, calm and collect, no matter what is thrown at you. A simple smile can change the course of your entire audition experience.
Watch your body language.
As in a class setting, be sure your body language is open and positive. Avoid putting your hands on your hips, slouching, crossing your arms or rolling your eyes. Stand up tall and show interest in the choreography in front of you.
With these tips, you’ll be sure to take your performance in the room to the next level. No matter the outcome, enjoy the ride and doing what you love – that’s the JJ way!
