Welcome to the JJGirl Spotlight, a series featuring the smart, talented, fearless young faces of Jo+Jax.
This week, meet 21-year-old Alexia Meyer from Orem, UT! There’s a good chance you already know Alexia, either from her days on the competition and convention circuit (she trained at and competed with The Dance Club, and is a former New York City Dance Alliance Senior Outstanding Dancer) or from her turn on So You Think You Can Dance Season 12! “I learned so much from being on that show,” Alexia says. “I created some lasting friendships, worked with phenomenal choreographers, learned how to interact with a camera, and grew as a dancer in all directions.” What’s next for this pint-sized powerhouse dancer? Catch up with her here…

Favorite dance style: Jazz
Favorite teacher: Joey Dowling. “I love how her movement requires technique, but the emphasis is on style and personality. I feel like a lot of dancers rely solely on their technique, but Joey’s movement really requires you to also have an understanding of your own personal style. Since I’ve grown up learning from Joey, I can truly feel my own natural movement becoming like hers. I love that.”
Dance idols: Mattie Love, Joey Dowling, Martha Nichols, and Dana Wilson. “I could go on and on with this list! Each of these women are beyond talented in their own ways. But along with their talent, they are also kind, humble, genuine people. I think being a great person is what really helps you to be a great dancer.”
Dream role: “I have quite a few. I would love to play some sort of dance role on Disney. I feel like I can pull off looking pretty young, so that role could suit me. There are a lot of contemporary companies in Los Angeles that I want to audition for and be a part of. I would also love to be in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular ensemble. I played the role of Clara many years ago with Radio City and absolutely loved it, so I would love to be a part of that show again.”

Favorite school subject: Psychology. “I’m currently doing online school, but eventually want to transfer to get a degree in Sports Psychology.”
Favorite ice cream flavor: Pumpkin cheesecake. “It’s a seasonal flavor, but it’s amazing.”
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? Salmon. “Gotta love seafood!”
Favorite book: Divergent
Favorite movie: Inception
Must-see TV: Psych

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go? “Venice! Once I was in an art class in high school and we had to create an informational poster for any kind of event we wanted. I chose to do a masquerade party in Venice. Since I spent a lot of time researching pictures of Venice, I fell in love with its beauty. I would absolutely love to go there someday.”
If you could perform a duet with anyone, who would it be? “Mattie Love, and I think we would have an awesome experience choreographing it ourselves. We both pull different things out in each other when we’re dancing together in class, so it would be fun to see what we could do when we put our creative minds together.”
If your life were a movie, who would you cast in it? “Shailene Woodley would play me. I love how adventurous she is. My best friend would be played by Emma Watson; she’s smart and always seems so put together. And my love interest would be Josh Hutchinson. I love a tall guy.”
What’s the weirdest thing in your dance bag? “Wellness Formula vitamins that Jim Nowakowski recommended to me because he believes they work miracles in preventing you from getting sick!”

Favorite way to hit the stage: “I love having any opportunity to be onstage, but there is nothing quite like performing by yourself. Learning how to captivate an audience by yourself is such a fun and fulfilling experience.”
Favorite Jo+Jax: “I’m always about comfort, so I love all the cover-ups, sweats, and rompers. I feel like they’re all such unique styles. I also have to say my Gisele Uni. That’s the piece of dance clothing I wear to most auditions.”
