We generally tune into awards shows for two reasons:
- The fabulous, OMG-I-wish-I-could-afford-couture fashion.
- The musical performances.
The presentations, the acceptance speeches, the star-studded red carpet — it’s all lovely. But what we really want are some high-octane outfits (here’s looking at you, JLo and TSwift) followed up with some I-can’t-sit-still musical performances.
So when the Grammys roll around every year, we expect the best and hope for the mind-blowing. At an awards show that celebrates all-things-music, we want the performances to bring the house down. We love celebs and musical superstars, but let’s get real: We’re in it for the dancers.
All that to say last night’s Grammy Awards were just…meh. It took a full hour and a half of airtime before we finally got to see some dancing.
And that was the broadcast’s ultimate high point: A live-from-Broadway performance from the cast of Hamilton, which went on to win the Grammy for Best Musical Theater album. (Well deserved — we can’t get enough of the show’s catchy cast album, killer choreography, and showstopping numbers.)
Because last night didn’t totally fulfill our dance dreams, here’s a look at the Hamilton performance, plus a few of our favorite performances from Grammys past…
